Charlie Swan
WHO: Charlie Swan is known to us as Bella’s shy, but wise-crackin’ father. He was only briefly married to Renée but together they had their only daughter, Bella. To everyone else in town, he’s known as Forks’ Chief of Police.
LIFE AFTER RENÉE: Although Charlie had been divorced from Renée for many years, one look at his house would make you think otherwise. After Renée left, Charlie lived alone until Bella decided to live with him when she was 17. When Bella first moved in, framed photos of Renée and Bella still adorned the space above the fireplace, including a wedding picture of Charlie and Renée, a baby picture of Bella and her subsequent school pictures. Eventually Charlie accepted that Renée didn’t love him anymore, and may have even developed some romantic feelings toward Sue Clearwater after Harry’s death brought them closer together.
CHIEF DADDY: Charlie’s occupation as Chief of Police caused some embarrassment for Bella. She fretted the idea of being chaffeured around town in his police cruiser so it was much to her relief that Charlie gifted her a truck. An old, blue, rumbly, roaring truck, but a truck that worked nonetheless. As Chief one of his traits is that he’s very protective, and unfortunately for Bella, Charlie pays special attention to his protective duties when it comes to her safety. That includes protecting her from “bad guys”, which sometimes is the category that Edward falls under (at least in Charlie’s eyes).
FRIENDS FOREVER? Charlie was really good friends with Harry Clearwater and they’d often go on fishing trips. Charlie was probably Harry’s fish fries’ #1 fan. Charlie’s friendship with Billy Black consisted mostly of watching sports on TV and some good ol’ joking around. They were pretty close friends until their relationship became a little strained partly due to Bella’s choice in men, which obviously made Billy very unhappy. Charlie and his friendship with Billy was never quite the same after that.
